Who has used a moses basket? What is the purpose of it?

I have been tagging along with my wife looking at baby stuff.

I really don't get what a moses basket is.

I understand you put the baby in it to sleep, but is this something you take out with you while you run errands?

Or is a moses basket supposed to replace a bassinett for the baby to sleep in at night.

I don't get it at all.

Who has used one here and how did you use it?

I used one for my babies when i would go visting other ppl's homes, when they did not have a place for my child to lay down while i was visiting. They are GREAT for small day time naps, when doing dishes, or even used as a co-sleeper at night with you. Since you never want to directly sleep with baby. Just make sure there is no bedding in with the baby at the time of sleep. They are not exactly a replacement for the bassinet, however i do know of many that have done that. Absurd waste of money. Baby can only safely fit in it for a month if you are lucky. My huge baby girls feet were dangling out of it just a week after birth.
