I hate to be a Grinch, but a 1 yr old's attention span is about 5 minuets. You end up having the party for yourself and not the child. A cupcake and some ice cream with the obligatory picture of the 'mess' is all you really need.
1st Birthday Party is always for grown ups because your baby will either be asleep or grumpy or eating at any rate he won't like to have a lot of people over him with pieces of pork so don't worry about the wording and send an invitation to the luau not 1st Birthday Party
I am not sure of any cute wordings.
But I would like to comment on the person below who said it was only for you. In some culturals the first birthday is a big deal. Who cares if she throws a big party? What if she has another child? I think the birthday party would more be for the family and the baby. Sure, the baby won't remember it, but at the time he/she will have fun, get better bonds sometimes with family members, and also benefit from some toys to play with that can increase many many factors of growing and learning. So bah hum bug to you.
Well it's not a "Luau" theme, but here is a Hawaiian theme from www.familyfun.com
http://familyfun.go.com/parties/birthday/feature/famf0702_hawaiianbday/famf0702_hawaiianbday.html
Your baby will see pictures of his party when he's older & appreciate the love of his family that was there.
Now, on to the wording!
How about something like .. "Time sure flies when you're having fun. Come and join me when I turn one!"
or in keeping with the luau theme ..
"Aloha! I'm turning one and I'd like you to come! Bring your coconuts and let's do the hula. Mahalo & see you there!"
Or something along those lines. (if you didn't know, Mahalo means thank you in Hawaiian)
Have fun !
