1st birthday ideas?
Answers:
keep it "kid friendly"! It can be a throw back to the birthday parties you used to attend as a kid, and a great nostalgic thing for all you adults! Hire a clown, play pin the tail on the donkey, get a pinata. The kids will be too young to participate in some of the activities, but the adults will have a blast being kids again themselves!!

Recall some of your birthdays and use the tactics here.

From Wikipedia:
A party is a social gathering intended primarily for celebration and recreation. While having some things in common with religious and seasonal festivals, the term "party" usually denotes a smaller gathering for a personal, rather than cultural, occasion even when the occasion is simply that of enjoyment.
Parties provide numerous opportunities for social interaction of various kinds, depending on the participants and their understanding of the accepted behavior for a given occasion. As a result, they tend to reinforce cultural and/or counter-cultural standards, though sometimes this is simply by providing a semi-acceptable social context for violating some of those standards.

I threw cake into my dad's eye, which my mother caught this picture which was very very funny!!! Life is not easy, but it's sure is Funny!!! When my daughter turned one, we invited over the family - mostly adults. We had cake and ice cream, served in a tea cup style holder I'd made. I shaped cups for the ice cream with fudge striped cookies for the bottom, and ice cream cone bowls for the cup, (holding them together with melted chocolate) and piped melted chocolate for the handles that were first cooled in the fridge then attached with more melted chocolate. I just did it for cutesie sake, but the adults went nuts over them. People who were offered ice cream and cake turned it down, but came back asking for it when they saw what it was served in.
I also made a little card for each guest showing the progression of my daughter of the last 12 months. I had taken pictures from the hospital to 3 days before the party and picked the best one for each month. Then shrunk them down to size and made 2 columns of 6 months, labeling each month with her age and printed it on cardstock. It said, thanks for helping to celebrate my birthday. Another hit of the party, especially for those who were constantly asking for new pictures.
Since it rained for my daughter's party, we just had cake and ice cream. For yours, maybe a bbq or hawaiian theme? Have everyone come dressed accordingly, including your little girl. Do the limbo, even she could get in on it, and she'll probably be the winner. ;)
Best of luck!
