What am I supposed to avoid taking for a cold whilst breastfeeding? There's something that dries up the milk..

I'm not even sure whether we're continuing- I officially stopped nursing the 1st of the year- but have regretted it and my one year old suckled two nights in a row so I'm keeping my options open. I think it may be diphenhydramine I'm supposed to avoid, or was it suphedrine?

Answers:
I believe you're thinking about decongestants taken internally-- these dry up your mucous membranes but can also dry the rest of you up too.

Here is a list of medications that are safe to take while breastfeeding:

If you're stuffed up, you can use nasal spray. Use cough drops to relieve coughing.

EVERYTHING!!... you shouldn't take any meds while breastfeeding...

taking nothing. motherhood is hard and you just have to suffer thru somtimes. you will hurt your child.please dont take anything but some hot baths and herbal teas I was told I could take psudeophedrine, but it made my baby cranky. Do not take benadryl this will dry up your milk. I took childrens nyquil, because it had less pseudoephedrine and no alcohol. contact your pediatrician

Sudafed tends to dry up your milk . . . but having moving into nursing a toddler (it's ok - mine's 15 months and I'm not planning on stopping anytime soon) you are probably safe taking a dose or two to get you through the worst of the cold.

Try some saline nose drops. It is sudafed that you cannot take!
