4 month old?

My nephew has the stomach virus so the doctor told us to give him pedialyte, but he won't drink it. He'll scream and cry untill he gets his formula. We do not want him to be dehydrated because he spits up the formula. What could we do to keep the baby hydrated?

Answers:
try gatorade.......... little at a time ohh I would do an oz at a time
half gat. half water that way it is not too strong. My kids always loved the orange. do this every half hour. not too much at a time.
dont' overwhelm his tummy. better to take in half an ounce than take in an ounce and back up it comes.

If that does not work give him the ever so small pieces of pop ice
I do mean small..........he is a little bitty guy remember that.

You could try half strength formula if he keeps that down

ok one thing..........im not a doctor just telling you what worked for me with my kids.
good luck with your little babe.

Other Answers:
See if he'll take some lukewarm water in a bottle. If he won't, just nurse him as often as you can.

Its important you keep introducing some fluid. Just little bits at a time so he can hold it down. If he cant keep fluid in at all, he may need iv fluids. add a small ammount of salt to his formula so he is getting the electrolites or get unflavored pedialyte and use it in place of water to mix the formula

I am a Medical Assistant....and the best thing for a baby to avoid dehydration is breast milk!! As long as the child is getting enough liquids he should be ok. If he is not breast fed then formula should be ok...Also dont feel bad....my son wouldnt drink the pedialyte for nothing! Even the tasteless kind....! So anyways.....keep him all ways next to a bottle or breast until the virus is away

add a little sugar to it, see if he drinks it. Also if I had a hard time with having mine drink when they were sick I used to put it in the medicine dispenser (the one that looks like a shot but with no needle) and slowly squirt it in. Good Luck.

try some gaterade.. its the same thing but itll come in better tasteing flavors that maybe hell like.. HONESTLY pedialyte IS HORRIBLE.. it taste really bad and when i was little it just made me even more sick.. it has aletrolites in it thats why they give it to them.. but so does gaterade and powerade so try them.. good luck and hope the little one is feeling beter xoxo well for starters the formula will be dehydrating him more...
just persist... its for his own good.. i went through this when my little fella was young, but with persistance i got it in to him.. its not the nices thing but it has to be done.. continue with small amounts of water every 15 minutes... try to put him in the bath as well, usually they swallow the bath water when they play... just make sure you have no soaps in there.. good luck!!

try mixing 4 oz of pedilyte with 2 oz of formula or try half pedilye and half sprite and shake it to get fizz out Pedialyte is best but I know it does not always work kids hate it. It may be best to just try good old fashion water as formula or milk is actually the worst thing for a stomach virus. Water will help with the dehydration some. Though he is still loosing minerals. IF he were a little older I would sudgest a the pedialyte popcycles. They are the only pedialyte my kids would take. Gaterade is very similar and has a lot of different flavors you might want to consider this if nothing else works.

The formula is fine, even if he's spitting it up, he's getting something. Watch the baby closely if he gets groggy and doesn't react to stimuli, that means he's dehydrated. Also if he is still wetting his diaper, then he's fine. Keep track of that. FYI the formula will NOT dehydrate him. Don't put salt in water that could dehydrate him if you put too much. If he's screaming and crying for his formula, that's good because it means that he is behaving normally and isn't dehydrated. Sounds so far like he is fine. Follow your gut. You will KNOW something is wrong if he gets dehydrated.

here are a coulpe things you can try to give him. i hopr they work.

get some peperment candy and smash it up and desolve it in hot water and give that to him... not only will this keep him hydrated it will also help settle his stomach.

also try some watered down gatoraide. this also has some elecrolites in it.

i hope this works and i hope that he feels better soon. so hard to see little ones sick.

good luck

Have you tried different flavors?? My son would not take the grape for nothin, but he would drink the clear one pretty well, for it being Pedialyte!!! Good luck! it might taste bad, but instead of the water, mix the formula with the pedialyte....It might work

put it in his bottle and keep tryin to give it to him.

Have you tried plain water? Some babies can keep that down even if they vomit up formula. Or you could try making the rehydration solution yourself.

Mix the following:
1 L. water
8 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/3 tsp. potassium chloride (salt substitute)

This is the approximate equivalent of Pedialyte (without the vile taste!).

If he refuses *everything* but formula, try offering him *sips* instead of bottles. He may be able to keep down a sip every 5-10 minues even if he vomits it up when he gets a bottle.

But...first and foremost...talk to your pediatrician before trying *any* of these!!
