side effect of calcium supplement?

Answers:
Ah the great calcium question! I will try to give you a little insight to this. We think we need alot of calcium to create bone and prevent bone loss. It is true that we need it...but if you think about it, North America is the BIGGEST consumers of dairy and calcium supplements in the world, yet we have the highest rates of osteoporosis....HMMMM I wonder why...well, according to research that I have been reading, the main reason we are so calcium deficient is cuz we are too acidic... Meaning we eat too many "acid forming" foods. And of course the acid "forming" foods are sugar, meats, dairy (ironically enough) chocolate, coffee, artificial flavors and sweeteners, and tap water or water that has no minerals like distilled. We MUST eat 80% of our diet ALKALINE (all veggies, fruits, and some grains and seeds) and 20% acidic. We seem to have it the opposite. your body will do ANYTHING to stay alkaline, thus it will pull calcium from your bones.

To answer your question, anything in excess is not good. Too much calcium will cause bone spurs, kidney stones, will aid in hardening the arteries and cause digestive upset. The recommended daily doseage is about 1000-1200mg of calcium a day. At least half of that should come from your diet. A cup of spinach has 280mg of calcium. 2 tablespoons of tahini (ground up sesame seeds) has about the same amount. Try sardines, molasses, dark leafy greens and sea vegetables like wakame, kelp, or arame. Soy has alot too. Taking a few hundred mg's of calcium in supplements is a good idea too, if you do however I recommend a 1:1 ration of equal calcium and magnesium because about 90% of the population is deficient in magnesium. Also try to get one with vitamin D and Zinc and Boron. Hope this helps, sorry it was so long, I am trying to better the lives of people with my knowledge ;)

What are you asking for what happens if you get too much or too little? I will try my best to answer. My books says only 10% of girls and 25% of boys meet the recommendation for calcium during their bone forming years. the DRI says 1,300 milligrams the amount in 4 cups of milk each day for everyone 9 through 18 years of age and 1,000 milligrams throught age 50 and 1,200 there aftr.

Bone loss is no a calcium deficiency disease. calcium intakes alone do little or nothing to reverse bone loss.

Taking self prescribed calcuim suppliments entail possible risks.

People who take calcium supplements risk:
impaired iron status. Calcuim inhibits iron absorption.
Acclerated Calcium loss. Calcium containing antacids taht also cnatin aluminum and magnesium hydroxide cause a net calcium loss.
urinary tract stone or kidney damage in susceptible individuals. People who have a history of kidney stone should be mnitored by a physician and choose calcium citrate if they take suppliments.
exposure to contaminants. Some preparations of bone meal and dolomites are contaminated with hazardous amounts of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead.
Vitamin D toxicity. Excess blood calcium.
Milk alkali syndrome. this condition is rare, but not absent. it i characterized by high blood calcium, metabolic alkalosi, and reanl failure. early symptomes inculde irritablility, headaches, and apathy.
Other nutrient interactions. calcium inhibits absorption of magnesum, phosphorus, and zinc.
Drug interactions. Calcium and tetracycline form an isoulbe complex that impair both mineral and drug absorption.
GI Distress. Constipation, intestinal bloating and excess gas are common.

Hope that is what your looking for. :)
