If you are a really religious person this is usually not neccesary unless you are stuck. Being stuck - you have realised your former goals and are looking for new ones - happens to everybody once in a while (hopefully not every few years though).
Then a evaluation of the past and looking for new goals and how to reach them can be helpfull.
How:
- the best (in my experience) is if you have a really good and wise friend that is willing to hear you talk (and listen) endlessy
- What colour is your parachute - is a good book for job- changers
- and of course (if you have the money) you could go to a course or even hire a coach. Personal experience most coaches suck - go for the course - its cheaper and you usually meet at least one sensible person (usually not the coach)
Good luck.!

It can be a really good idea - esp. if you're at a transitional point or are looking to make a major change in your life in the near future. The one thing I'd suggest is to try to keep it fluid enough that you can change based on other changes in your life. If you make it too specific, it may not be what you want "halfway" through or, if it's a specific stretch goal, you may be setting yourself up for disappoint.
I'd say:
You can include specific changes, but be sure to allow room to get there in the best way for you at the time.
Make sure the goals are attainable.
Evaluate how the goals fit with your personality / life. Make sure you're being consistent in your goals.
