how long do have to wait for your hair to regrow after you lost it because of medication?

I had chemotherapy for bone cancer and was bald for 12 months. After the chemotherapy ended, the hair started growing back pretty quickly. However, my hair was dark blonde and wavy before the chemotherapy, but when it grew back it was dark and very kinky. It was an Afro. After that grew out, though, it returned to its previous color and texture.
