I'm in track and run 8x 200meter sprints 2 times a week. Is it normal that my lungs hunt a bit after practice?
Answers:
I suspect that the physiology is not too different than that of exercise-induced asthma, except that the normal person's symptoms will improve with continued training.
When we exercise with extreme exertion we are bringing in a lot of air (that has not been warmed and humidified adequately) through the broncus and into the lungs. With exposure to the volume of cooled air, the bronchi will spasm (bronchospasm) which is responsible for the burning usually felt in the central chest.
When you are more conditioned you will not be as breathless. Therefore you bring in less cool, dry air and the bronchi do not spasm. If you are well-conditioned and this problem is not improving, you may have a shade of exercised induced asthma. In that case you should visit your physician who can do some tests (but your condition sounds so minor tests might not demonstrate anything) or he/she may just prescribe an albuterol inhaler, which can be used prior to your practice.
Good luck.
