how can i help my best friend feel better?

My best friend, Bryton, is like a sister to me. We do everythingn together. But her mother died a few years ago and that's why she moved to my town last year after her dad remaried and moved in with her stepmom. but sometimes when we're together and i say something about my mom or something like that, she starts getting quieter and then i feel realy bad. how can i avoid those moments, or maybe make her feel better? i already told her that i'm always gonna be here for her.
Answer:
The lost of a mother or other close relative is very difficult and often takes years to adjust. Some little word or sight might trigger a memory that will bring a reminder of the lost.

The best friend is one that listens. It is more important to listen than to talk when a friend needs help. They need to have times that they can express their feelings. One suggest is at one of those difficult moments is to ask them "what are you thinking about?". Then listen without saying much except for reassurance and comfort. Over time she will come to feel more comfortable about opening up to you about what she is feeling in those tense moments.

In any case, just being there is important or she would not want to come around anymore. So, take it slow and look for ways to have fun along with the serious times.
Other Answer:
That's quite a delicate situation.

It's hard to say whether an action you take to make her feel better will work or just make her feel worse...

So, the only options really are to talk with her about it more, or let time do its thing. Perhaps talk about this with her Father first -- he might be able to help.

My condolences to your best friend.
