how does barium effect an x-ray on a patient with high blood sugar?
Answers:
there is no affect
As a tech I ask because Patients who are diabetic may take a medication that I would inform the patient to STOP taking for 48 hours due to the conjuction of IV contrast I administer, not the oral (barium).
Barium will not increase, decrease, or alter blood sugar
Other Answers:
The word is 'affect'.
barium would not be absorbed so..there really would be no increase in the blood sugar..it could reduce the sugar level..on the effects of not absorbing any food from the intestine.
It doesn't as far as I know. When we have a patient drink barium (for a Upper GI or esphagram or for a CT scan) or when we introduce it rectally (for a Barium Enema), we don't even ask the patient if they are diabetic. If it affected blood sugar, patients who have diabetes would have complications. And that does not happen.
